Exploring the Waltmarie

2024-07-15

Maker, creator, and sometimes penpal of clowns Joel Pederson recently introduced me to the poetry form known as the Waltmarie.

The Waltmarie, developed by poet Candace Kubinec and named after two other poets. It’s a simple form: 10 lines, with the even numbered lines having only two syllables, and forming a poem of their own within the larger poem. The odd lines have no such restrictions.

After seeing their attempt, I was inspired to try writing one as well:

There are moments where
     you will
wander unexpected paths on your journey.
     Find that
place within yourself which others may call
     madness,
and watch that it does give and
     does take
a long journey to create a life
     practice.
